Like Ibn Hazm he defended the dynasty of the Umayyads and deplored its fall and the following dissolution of the Andalusian state and the coming of the taifas. Abu Ubaid in his work Fadhail al-Qur'an and Muhammad ibn Hazm in his Kitab al-Nasikh wa`l Mansukh both recorded this verse as well but alleged that it was part of a surah that was later abrogated and duly withdrawn.
